At Oakworth Primary School, we believe that every child is an artist. Our carefully designed art curriculum nurtures confident, creative, and enthusiastic learners who are excited to explore, experiment, and express themselves through art.

We are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Oakworth and the wider Yorkshire countryside, and we regularly draw on these natural surroundings to inspire our work. From seasonal changes to local textures, colours, and scenery, our environment plays a key role in sparking creativity and deepening artistic understanding.

Throughout their time at Oakworth, children explore a wide range of techniques and materials — including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and printmaking. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build skills over time, encouraging children to revisit and refine their ideas, and to develop their own style and confidence as artists.

A key part of our approach is the use of sketchbooks, which are an essential space for children to record, experiment, reflect, and grow. These books are more than just a place to practise; they show a journey of artistic development and help foster a mindset of ongoing improvement and creative exploration.

We also place great value on learning from others. Children are introduced to a diverse range of artists, designers, and craftspeople — both local and global — helping them understand that art is a powerful, shared language that reflects different cultures, ideas, and experiences.

At Oakworth, we celebrate individuality, imagination, and creative risk-taking. We foster a classroom culture where effort and originality are recognised, and where children feel proud of what they create. Art is not just a subject — it’s a way for our children to see the world, express themselves, and grow in confidence.

By the time they leave us, Oakworth pupils are passionate, reflective, and confident artists, equipped with the skills and self-belief to continue their creative journeys beyond primary school.
