Our Curriculum
Personal Development
At our school, we believe that personal development is an essential part of preparing children to become confident, resilient, responsible and respectful members of their community. We want every child to develop not only academically, but also socially, emotionally and physically, with a strong sense of themselves and their place in the wider world.
Our personal development provision is woven throughout school life. We provide children with a wide range of opportunities, experiences and responsibilities that help them to discover their interests, develop new skills, build positive relationships and grow in confidence.
Enrichment and Extra-Curricular Opportunities
We offer a varied programme of before- and after-school activities, giving children opportunities to explore interests beyond the classroom and develop new talents. Our clubs include activities such as craft, netball, dodgeball and yoga, alongside other opportunities throughout the year.
These activities encourage children to work collaboratively, challenge themselves, develop healthy lifestyles and, most importantly, have fun while learning new skills.
Trips, Visits and Wider Experiences
We believe that memorable experiences help children to develop their understanding of the world around them. Every year group has the opportunity to visit Within the Woods Forest School, a local organisation that provides children with valuable opportunities to learn and explore in a natural environment.
These experiences allow children to develop confidence, resilience, independence and teamwork while learning outside of the traditional classroom setting. Spending time in nature and taking part in practical activities gives pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills and build a deeper appreciation of the environment and the world around them.
Alongside our Forest School experiences, all children have the opportunity to take part in school trips and educational visits during their time with us. These visits are carefully selected to enhance and bring to life the curriculum children are learning in class, providing memorable experiences and opportunities to apply their learning in different contexts.
We also regularly welcome visitors and external organisations into school to supplement our curriculum and provide children with experiences and expertise that extend beyond the classroom. These opportunities help children to make connections between their learning and the wider world.
Residential Experiences
Our residential visits are an important part of our personal development programme. Children have the opportunity to take part in residential experiences in Year 4 and Year 6.
These experiences provide children with opportunities to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence. Being away from home and experiencing new challenges in a supportive environment helps children to develop skills that they can draw upon throughout their lives.
PSHE and Wellbeing

We follow the SCARF PSHE spiral curriculum, which provides children with a carefully sequenced programme of learning throughout their time at school. The curriculum supports children in developing their understanding of relationships, health and wellbeing, safety, rights and responsibilities, and the wider world.
As children progress through the school, key themes are revisited and developed at an age-appropriate level, allowing pupils to build on their previous knowledge and understanding.
We place a strong emphasis on helping children to understand themselves and others, make positive choices, recognise and manage their emotions, develop healthy relationships and know how to keep themselves safe.
Understanding Our Community
We work closely with members of our local community and other professionals to help children understand the world beyond school.
We regularly welcome the Fire Service and PCSOs into school to deliver assemblies and age-appropriate sessions on relevant topics such as safety, responsibility and making positive choices. These visitors provide valuable real-world experiences and give children the opportunity to ask questions and develop their understanding of important issues.
Charity and Giving Back
Charity of the Year, providing children with opportunities to learn about the work of a charity and understand how their actions can make a positive difference to the lives of others.
This year, our Charity of the Year is Candlelighters, a charity supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer. Throughout the year, children will have opportunities to take part in fundraising activities and learn more about the important work the charity does.
Pupil Voice and Leadership
We are passionate about giving children a voice and providing meaningful opportunities for them to contribute to school life.
Our School Council enables pupils to share their views, ideas and suggestions and to play an active role in making our school an even better place. Children also have opportunities to take on leadership roles through our school ambassadors, developing confidence, communication skills and a sense of responsibility.
These roles help children understand that their opinions matter and that they can make a positive contribution to their school community.
Developing the Whole Child
Personal development is not confined to a particular lesson or activity. It is something that takes place throughout the school day and across the school year.
Through our curriculum, enrichment activities, trips, residentials, Forest School experiences, visitors, leadership opportunities and wider school experiences, we aim to develop children who are:
• Confident – willing to try new things and express their ideas.
• Resilient – able to face challenges, learn from mistakes and persevere.
• Respectful – understanding and valuing the views, beliefs and experiences of others.
• Responsible – able to make positive choices and understand the impact of their actions.
• Independent – developing the skills and confidence to manage themselves and make appropriate decisions.
• Healthy – understanding the importance of physical and emotional wellbeing.
• Curious – interested in the world around them and eager to learn.
• Active members of their community – recognising that they have a role to play in making a positive difference.
We want every child to leave our school with memories, experiences, skills and values that extend far beyond the classroom. Our aim is to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to discover their strengths, develop their character, broaden their horizons and feel ready to take their next steps with confidence.
