Our Curriculum
Outdoor Learning
Adventures of a Lifetime
At Oakworth Primary School, we believe in the power of outdoor learning to inspire, challenge and develop our pupils beyond the classroom. Through a wide range of hands-on outdoor experiences, we help children build confidence, resilience and a deep connection to the world around them.
From exploring nature to tackling high ropes, our outdoor curriculum supports personal growth and teamwork at every stage.
Year 5 Herd Farm Residential
In Year 5, children take part in an exciting residential visit to Herd Farm. Set in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside, this trip offers a brilliant introduction to outdoor adventure and independence. Pupils enjoy activities such as:
-
Giant Swing
-
Zip lining
-
Team challenges
- High ropes
This memorable experience helps children build trust, determination, and lifelong friendships.
Year 6 Newby Wiske Residential
Our Year 6 pupils enjoy a more advanced residential at Newby Wiske Hall, where they push their limits and celebrate the end of primary school with new challenges. Activities include:
-
Rock climbing & abseiling
-
Water sports
-
Problem-solving games
-
Zip line adventures
This final residential is a highlight of their time at Oakworth, preparing them for the transition to secondary school with pride and confidence.
Forest School – Within the Woods
All year groups benefit from sessions at Within the Woods, our local Forest School site. Here, children learn vital outdoor skills such as shelter-building, fire-lighting, tool use, and nature exploration in a safe and stimulating woodland environment. These sessions support wellbeing, curiosity and a love for nature.
Doe Park Outdoor Adventure
We also make the most of our local surroundings, including visits to Doe Park Water Activities Centre, where children experience kayaking, raft-building and other water-based challenges. These day trips are always packed with excitement and team spirit!
